Nan Goldin
When I look at this picture there are a lot of ideas that come right to my mind. The first idea I get is the idea of depression. I get the idea that this person is super frustrated and most likely is drowning himself. Something else came to mind for me also and this was the idea that he is just sticking his head under water to get wet. I say this because if you look at the guy's hands you will see that the guy is covering his mouth with his hands. If you were going to end it all why would you cover your hands. The last idea that I get from this photo is the idea that the man is washing away his sins. In the church you become baptized sometime in your life if it's something that you want to do so I do kind of get the idea that this man really could be technically washing away his sins and this is the guy's way at a fresh start in life. The idea of baptism is such is to wash away your sins so this could really be an idea that is going on in the picture. Goldin did a great job with this picture making me have a lot of questions and make me interpret a lot of different things that could possibly be going on in this photo.
This was another picture that took me a couple minutes to think about and really try to decide what is going on in the picture. After some thinking I came to the conclusion that she is in a battle with herself in this picture. I say this because if you look closely into the picture her eyes are focused on herself. This gives me the idea that the photo means she is focusing on the battle of getting rid of that person in the mirror and becoming a better person. If you have seen any self-motivated videos, you will normally see a person looking in a mirror looking back at themselves and normally it comes back around again to see a whole different you are looking into the picture. They normally look and smile because they know how hard they worked to change the way they looked and most importantly of all impress themselves and make them feel good about themselves because honestly, it's a very good motivating feeling and a definite ego booster.
Nan Goldin was a very unique photographer. The way she took pictures and the way she made them have many different meanings is truly impressive. I liked looking at a lot of the work she did, and it even inspired me with a couple more ideas for this project that we are working on.
