Matt Black

Matt Black was born in Santa Maria, California. While in high school he learned black-and-white journalism. In the 1990s Black made many trips to Latin America where he eventually got his first prize in the daily life category of the World Press Photo Award.

I really like this picture from Black. I like this photo because of the little river-looking area. In the photo, it looks like a tiny creek that has oil floating in the middle of it. This photo makes me think of back home. I have a very similar-looking area back home so when I see this picture it makes me think of being home and outside walking the railroad tracks and watching the sunset over the mountains. The picture is just an overall vibe for me because in an area like that, it's farmland and it's peaceful. You can just sit there and watch the cows graze the fields as the deer come onto the field and make friends with the cows. I am just so amazed that the picture looks like it was taken a couple steps from my house. Everything seems to be in the right spot and it's almost a little freaky to me. I just love the home vibe that this picture brings to me since I haven't been home in a while.

This photo for me has one meaning and that is even in bad times you can make the best of it. This looks like an area that is in the middle of nowhere and it's a farm area. It doesn't seem like there are a lot of places to go around and have a good time so most of the time it's boring. Even in a time that seems boring this an grabbed his guitar and provided some sort of entertainment for any of the people in that area. Even in boring bad times, you can still make some fun out of it for everyone. The main reason I think this is a place in the middle of nowhere is the animals that look like horses. Horses need areas to roam and run and where else to do that but in the open fields. Then you have the trailer and big houses it just seems like a big open area. This is unique because it almost reminds me of another spot at home I live in almost the middle of nowhere and have horses so I can picture what is going on in certain moments like the horses running in the field.
