Man Ray

Who was Man Ray?  Man Ray was a visual artist who made some very very unique pictures. Something I read about Ray Man was that he must have had a very interesting childhood of some sort. In a reading, it stated that he allowed very few details about his early life or background. Sometimes after using a camera to take pictures Man Ray moved away from, it to an anti-radical art movement. So he then started making objects and photographic methods for making those images.

Take this image below into account. This is literally called a Rayo gram. What's unique about this picture is that it looks like the picture was taken while the slinky of some sort was thrown into the air or it was bent like that already in some shape or form. But really what's going on in this picture is the slinky is on a table and it is already bent to look like that. This photogram also makes you think about what this picture may be trying to convey. Maybe this is a symbol of something that Man Ray uses frequently. Like maybe in Man Ray's childhood his favorite toy was a slinky and so he uses them to shoot back memories of what his childhood was like. Ray man does a good job of really making your brain think about what there is to be portrayed in a photo. I am still trying to figure out what certain things are in the photo. Is the stuff objects, paint, or something random? this paragraph relates to the bottom picture.

The next picture here portrays some kind of abstraction. It's a yes and no because I can tell that there is a slinky coil of wire. The thing is though you can't tell what any of the things are in the rest of the picture very well. Man Ray does a great job in this picture of portraying that abstraction and creating meaning in the photo. You don't know if the slinky means something or if the rest of the stuff in the photo is the important stuff. Having the slinky be the closest thing and the clearest that must mean something but just maybe there is more to the photo than just that slinky.

In my opinion, Man Ray is very good at what he does. He makes you think in ways that you may not have thought at some points. He tricks your brain into seeing things that are there and then makes your brain process the whole meaning of the picture. But with his pictures that are going to be very hard because of his sneaky ways of making the picture and it's very unique. As you can see many things can be done with a photogram.
